The Canic Chronicles is an adult fantasy series that follows the Inaki-Valhari family, primarily told from Narok's PoV. It is a character focused work that explores religion, gender, class, environmentalism, and politics in a world inspired by early medieval Eurasia.The first trilogy (arc 1) starts with SHRIKE & THORN and focuses on Narok and Kasandra when they're in their twenties.The second trilogy (arc 2) takes place 15 years later and puts more focus on Narok and Kasandra's kids, though Narok is still the primary PoV character.

SHRIKE & THORN Pitch

Narok is a monster hunter blessed by the sun god. When his closest friend is murdered, he seeks vengeance on the killer—against his god’s wishes. While on the hunt, he crosses paths with a sorceress from a rival religious order with a vendetta of her own.

History

The Canic Chronicles is a novel series I first wrote in the mid-2000s when I was in middle school. At the time, the story was a YA series that followed Chya (called Ariia in that version), Narok and Kasandra's youngest child. I spent seven years reworking the first novel with intentions to have it traditionally published. However, I lacked experience to write it the way I envisioned, so I set it aside.From 2014 to 2019, I wrote different stories with the intention of traditional publishing. At the end of 2019, burn out hit. I'd just graduated college and didn't know what I wanted to do with my life. I was diagnosed with several mental health conditions, left my toxic cult-like religion, got a day job, and decided I was going to give up on this publishing dream.From 2020-2024, I started to really figure out who I was as a person, which included puzzling out if I even enjoyed writing at all. I spent these years in fandom spaces where there was no pressure to sell, market, or be 'the best' at anything. I was just here to learn how to have fun creating again.In June 2024--ten years since I set TCC aside--I had a dream about the characters. Story beats and character arcs began to fall into place. I immediately wrote half-baked ideas into an old notebook. I hadn't experienced this kind of excitement for writing an original story in almost five years.Since then, I've been working on a complete overhauled version of the world and story. My dream to publish hadn't died; it'd just gone dormant. My current plan is to persue the traditional route, but I am keeping my expectations realistic. For now, I'm just having fun with my old characters.

Q: Where can I read this thing?
A: Nowhere, for now. I've completed the first draft, and will start revising in early 2026. After it's done, I will be searching for my first round of beta readers.Q: What representation is in SHRIKE & THORN?
A: Narok is transgender, demisexual, autistic, Very Mentall Ill, and biracial (though race based on skin color isn't really a Thing or issue in this world). Kasandra is bisexual and probably has ADHD. Rakara is sapphic and somewhere on the asexual spectrum. There are also multiple other trans and queer characters in the supporting cast.Q: If Narok is trans, and Kasandra is cis, how can they have biological kids?
A: Narok's transition involved giving him a fully functional cis body. It was done by sketchy magical means that altered him completely. He was under the belief he couldn't sire children. (Based on the IRL myth that going on T makes you infertile.)Q: Is this a queernormative world?
A: I'm going to say no, but it also depends on the culture. Some are more accepting than others.Q: What are the current content warnings for SHRIKE & THORN?
